Submarine Windows

yellow_submarine_w450 A journey to the underwater world can offer unique impressions and sights. If you like to explore the underwater world in the protective hull of a submarine, you will need a suitable window. Acrylic is the material of choice when it comes to include viewing and observation facilities into a pressure vessel. (…”For the purpose of these Rules, acrylic plastic windows are flat or curved windows for the view ports of pressure hulls which are made of cast, unlaminated polymethyl methacrylate plastic.”, GL, Edition 1998). The following propperties of acrylic are crucial for its use in submarines:
  • clear, distortion-free view
  • homogeneous, monolithic character
  • certified to be used for Pressure Vessels for Human OccupancyPVHO-I )
The PVHO rules are written for a water depth of several hundred meters. However underwater windows in ship hulls and in semi submarines are located close to the water surface. Vor this application PVHO should not be applied. A more interactive approach between the classification society in charge and the marine engineers should be preferred. This approach should include comparisons with similar vessels, applied examination of static of the window structure, material certificates and the like
