On an old industrial terrain in Zwevegem, Belgium, hidden in a buffer basin, are three old fuel oil tanks. The largest is no less than 17 meters high and has a diameter of 28 meters. The repurposing of this unique accommodation presented a stiff challenge in itself. Brainstorming sessions by an international group of young architects brought up interesting ideas, such as an arena theater or ... a diving tank along the lines of Gasometer in Duisburg's Landscape Park. The latter idea caught on.

...Diving in the diving tank is comparable to diving in open water. In Belgium and the Netherlands, diving in open water always means that visibility is limited. The realization of the diving tank is therefore a perfect intermediate step between diving in a pool and in open water. Ideal to prepare the diver safely for the turbulent outdoor water.

The diving pool with 4.7 million liters of water and a depth of 15 meters. Hydrosight installed a total of 5 underwater windows. Visitors are able to monitor the activities of the divers. A large rectangular aquarium window highlights the entrance of the building. Four porthole type windows are fitted in the cafeteria. All of them are 11 meters below the water.

The tank is operational since 2014. Hydrosight has been contracted for yearly inspections. In 2023, all windows are still in operation without any signs of aging.
